London - Launching at Decorex 2016, Mademoiselle is Haute Déco’s new collection of statement handles designed in homage to Coco Chanel. They feature a vibrant, multi-dimensional woven texture inspired by Coco Chanel’s legendary bouclé fabric launched in 1953 when the iconic Parisian designer reopened her couture house after a fifteen years break.
Evolving from a classic Scottish tweed, the iconic bouclé fabric remains closely associated with rue Cambon’s couture house to this day. It is achieved by weaving the warp and weft, combining a variety of different threads in the weft to create a unique and somewhat irregular appearance.
The bouclé fabric’s history is closely intertwined with the new-style suits for ladies also launched in 1953. Mademoiselle Chanel was designing for the liberated women in reaction to a fashion world dominated by men, which she saw as trapping women in constraining garments unsuitable for modern living. With its slim silhouette, boxy yet fluid lines and creative fabrics, the Chanel suit soon became a status symbol of casual, comfortable chic for a new generation, led by America’s first lady Jacquie Kennedy.
“Last Autumn’s Mademoiselle Privé exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery inspired us to look at Coco Chanel’s signature fabric and to translate it into bronze," explains Marie-Véronique Swannell, Haute Déco’s founder. “Beyond the woven texture itself, we wanted to capture the spirit of Mademoiselle’s enduring style, her legendary nonchalant elegance: a combination of clean, fluid lines with just the right amount of detailing.”
Whilst Coco Chanel’s designs cannot be describe as minimalist – at least not by current standards – her designs were all about achieving just the right balance of detailing and embellishments. Indeed it is a recurrent theme in her often-quoted styling advice, as cited for example by Karen Karbo in The Gospel according to Coco Chanel. Probably the most relevant “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off”, could be said to apply toHaute Déco’s design philosophy: achieving just the right amount of detailing so that it virtually doesn’t register is one their guiding principles.
Focusing exclusively on high-impact, statement handles, MADEMOISELLE collection is made up of a small number of high-impact handles for entrance doors and cabinetry, each relating in some way to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s designs and era.
Half-Moons, a favoured shape in the 1930’s during which the Chanel couture house prospered, turn into striking entrance door handles.
Rectangular Frames connote the 1930’s Bauhaus movement and the boxy silhouettes that Coco Chanel designed.
Double Cs, a contemporary version of the more classic half-moon shape, are inspired by the interlocking Cs of Coco Chanel’s initials.
Made of solid bronze, each piece is mirror-polished to achieve a jewelry-grade sparkle, turning these handles into door jewelry. The collection is available in three finishes designed to complement its vibrant texture.
